When Everything Else Makes You Feel Like You're Driving Blind
— May 24, 2019 | 2 min read
'One Day We Should' are a family of 5 who sold everything they owned to travel around Australia. Since 2017 they have been living the nomadic life on the road with their 3 young children. They inspire others with their story, providing free camp tips and experience.
After a couple years of talking about it, researching and wishing we could just pack up and travel around Australia we decided to just do it! We didn't want to leave it too late.... So we packed up and sold our farm, sold everything we owned! We set off on the 1st of May, 2017 and have been travelling the great Australian outback with our 3 young kids since. Our children are now 6, 5 and 3 (before you say it, yes we do have our hands full). This has been our biggest life decision and so far we believe it's our BEST decision. We hope to inspire you to get out there and explore your own backyard!- Kirby and Gibbo
THE NEW 6x6 UTE
“In the months prior to starting our custom 6x6 build we spent each night researching and designing every detail of the build. We had a specific style in mind and set out to create Australia’s BEST family overlanding rig” Kirby says.
Sometimes we would call on our large social media following to help us make decisions. (Kirby jokingly-) “One decision we didn’t foresee was the 4 colour options for the inserts on our Narva Ultima 180 LED driving lights! We took it to a vote on our Instagram page receiving a huge input from our following. Black eventually winning by only a few votes.”
NIGHT RUN
The conversion was completed!
We were in for a long night of driving as we pulled out of the 6x6 workshop. We were running out of time as we only had a few days till our sailing on the boat to Tassie. So we set off to Queensland, ready to pick up our DIY canopies and the custom tray that (husband) Gibbo had built the week prior.
Not long after being on the road the sun sank below the horizon and it was time to trial out the new driving lights. These amazing LEDs are as bright as day but we really noticed the difference when we had to dim them! ‘It was like all of a sudden we were driving blind.’
THE DIY PROJECT
The next day we were in for a big one, installing the canopies onto the ute ready for our 3,500 km journey south to Victoria. We caught the boat to Tasmania, ready to explore the island state and finish fitting out the ute.
All the lighting on the canopy/tray, switches and fuses are ‘Narva’ as we wanted to keep with one brand for everything. The bonus being, they are commonly found in most Auto shops around Australia (meaning no need to wait for postage, which can sometimes be difficult for us living on the road full time.)
LIGHT IT UP
When it came to lighting our ute we didn't hold back. Every corner of the ute has a work light, every canopy door has an automatic light and even the rooftop tent has its own permanent lighting installed inside the tent and on the ladder. Having such a huge range of lights makes setting up in the dark a breeze.
BELLS AND WHISTLES
So far we are extremely happy with the fit out and it suits our needs perfectly for our life on the road.
